These intricately decorated creations are a well-known part of celebrations of Da de Muertos, or Day of the Dead.
These skulls represent death, explains Juan Aguirre, director of Mano a Mano, a New York-based non-profit organization dedicated to celebrating Mexican culture and promoting understanding of Mexican traditions.
Death doesn't have to be bitter, it can be sweet. Da de Muertos (the los is an Americanization and isn't needed, Aguirre notes) is all about celebration, not sorrow.
On Da de Muertos, people leave sugar skulls, sometimes decorated with the names of loved ones who have died, on an altar as an ofrenda (offering). Its really an offering to the soul theyre remembering, Aguirre explains.
People will also give sugar skulls to loved ones who are still living. It might seem a little strange. Why would you give someone a sugar skull with their name on it, if usually, you put it on the altar to remember the dead? Aguirre asks. But its a way of showing appreciation for someone.
Da de Muertos coincides with Catholic holidays of All Saints Days and All Souls Day on November 1 and 2, but that wasn't always the case. The tradition pre-dates Spanish invasion of Mexico, with its roots in indigenous Aztec Ritual.
Prior to Spanish invasion, People in Mexico used to make altars for the dead, and they used to put real skulls on them, Aguirre explains.
But the Spaniards, when they saw those celebrations, didnt like them. They thought it was gruesome to put bones on altars. The Spanish replaced the real skulls with skulls made from sugar paste, a technique that originated in the Middle East before coming to Spain, and then Mexico. Skulls and other sugar figures made with this technique are called alfeiques. Sometimes, clay is used instead.
Spanish invaders also changed celebrations from a month long summer festival to a shorter festival that synchronized with Catholic holidays.
Today, centuries of tradition go into these decorations which means the plastic versions you may see in stores (and as part of some Halloween costumes) may not be correct.
Sugar skulls have a very specific tradition, and what we find here in the U.S. is that sometimes they add symbols that are not part of Day of the Dead, Aguirre says.

fishing line & milk jugs are. It can & will break up? Puncture Vital Organs? Cause Sepsis? Day1? Yrs Later? Even Kills.
I had a a Massive Infection.He Literally Saved My Life. But after 3surgeries by him 2012-13? I still had same symptoms. Till 2021 in July? We found a Dr. Specializes in Pudendal Neuralgia. FEW DO IN U.S. (What I have caused instantly by Mesh.) We went to Arizona after we finally got an appt.
He had ability to do Pudendal Nerve MRIS there in Phoenix. So he did a 4+hr Lathroscopic Surgery where he found more 23yr old Mesh Crap behind my Pubic Bone! He got all out possible exc.? A Metal Barbed Anchor from the Mesh Sling Screwed into my Pelvic Bone.
To try to remove it? Would shatter
my pubic bone. So its left close to my Pudendal Nerve. But he also put Botox Shots into my Pudendal Nerve After. That Helped My Pain& Spasms to that extent? 1st time EVER in 21yrs!
But they only last 4-6mo. So I had them again in March 2021. My only hope? Is that some way they relax the nerve. But the Dr. Said Any Nerve That's Spasmed 21yrs? Will take a while to Calm Down. So I tried to set up an appt. For a 3rd Shot he recommended.
But I was told he moved and they had no idea where! But now? We're in so much medical debt from last surgery Medicare Didnt pay on. Because it was considered "experimental"
That there is no way we can afford another one or the big expenses to travel out of state. +Our old RV? Finally went OUT & IS beyond Repair.
How I traveled many times because it allowed me to lay down in a Reg. Bed vs. A back Seat or Back of Van. I only share these facts to warn ALL I can about Mesh. I will get another Pud.Nerve Burning in Feb. Because Medicare will pay for Pud. Nerve Blocks every 2mo. But nerve burning? They pay every 6mo. I had 1-2weeks improvement each time.
